To mark World Environment Day, on 5 June, Croatia’s President Zoran Milanović received a delegation from the Croatian Business Council for Sustainable Development (HR BCSD), consisting of representatives of ten member companies and Council Director Mirjana Matešić.
Each member of the delegation presented their company, along with real-world examples and proposals, based on draft measures for economic recovery through the use of principles of sustainable development. JGL’s Dorotea Pernjak Banić, member of the Board of Directors and Head of Global Product Management, presented the company with the topics "Introducing sustainable development into the education system” and "Promoting solidarity and the fight against inequality.”
"The principles of sustainable development should be properly integrated into the education system to equip young people with specific knowledge and skills needed to understand the risks and work towards a solution. One of the things I have noticed at JGL is the need for a clear and strong awareness of sustainable development and knowledge of its principles and of human rights among young candidates entering the selection process,” says Pernjak Banić.
JGL’s representative also pointed out that introducing sustainable development into the education system at all levels and placing human rights higher on the government’s list of priorities would ensure a continuous development of life and career skills, maintain the competitiveness of domestic companies on the market, and promote values aligned with true sustainable development. With this foundation of knowledge and values, employers would be able to develop the means to protect existing jobs and create new ones, especially in manufacturing.
"This would safeguard the dignity and livelihood of those most affected by recession, both within our companies and beyond. It would also create a more optimistic image of Croatia and improve the prospects for developing a happy, democratic and progressive society that young people want to live in,” the attendees concluded.
