An incredible sighting of two monk seals, the rarest of all seals, and the most endangered mammals in the world, has exhilarated several passers-by on the Istrian coast during the last few days. Relatively high temperatures are obviously pleasant to the "humans of the sea," so it is no wonder that they like to relax in the shoals of south Istria, from the beaches of Kamenjak to the bays in Ližnjan!
It bears repeating that the monk seals must not be disturbed. This is an extremely gentle and rare animal whose almost extinct species is hopefully recovering in our sea. We also gave a small but important contribution to its tracking - the Aqua Maris Programme supports the work of the "Sredozemna medvjedica" Society, an association for research and the preservation of nature. This support comes in financial form and is intended for the continuance of the project Monitoring of monk seals via MULTIPIR 12 cameras placed in caves/habitats on the east and west coast of Istria, with a special focus on the previously mentioned Cape Kamenjak and the Island of Cres.
