JGL has organised Heart Allies Day for the first time – a new initiative aimed at raising awareness of the importance of regular monitoring of cardiometabolic risk factors. The event was carried out in cooperation with the Croatian League for Hypertension, with support from its student sections and partners. Employee turnout was exceptional – 175 colleagues took advantage of the opportunity for free health measurements and education.
As part of the event, participants had their blood pressure, glucose levels, cholesterol, BMI and body composition measured, accompanied by expert interpretation and counselling. These parameters often present without symptoms, yet play a decisive long-term role in the development of cardiovascular, metabolic, and kidney diseases – which is why they are often referred to as silent killers.
A highlight of the event was a lecture delivered by Prof. Ivan Pećin, MD, PhD, Head of the Department for Metabolic Diseases at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb. With clarity and encouragement, he explained the consequences of elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose, and emphasised the key message: everyone should know their values – their number.
"One of the stations in the hunt for the ‘Silent Killer’ was JGL. The hunters – young future doctors from the University of Zagreb and University of Rijeka School of Medicine – helped as many as 175 JGL employees check their numbers. A commendable initiative, because it’s always better to be the hunter than the prey!" said Prof. Pećin.
Employees could also enjoy healthy vegan snacks specially prepared for the occasion, complementing the measurements and educational activities. This small but meaningful gesture served as a symbolic first step in raising awareness of everyday dietary choices and healthier lifestyle habits.
"This health initiative was a great reminder of how important it is to take care of ourselves – not only when something is wrong, but preventively, while we are still strong and well. Having the measurements, along with medical advice, available to everyone in the Pharma Valley complex showed how a simple step can make a big difference for our health. Let’s stay healthy and choose prevention over surprises!" emphasized Anđelina Žnidaršić, BU Manager in Strategy.
The excellent employee turnout confirmed how important investing in health is, and how workplace initiatives like this make participation simpler and more accessible for everyone.
Taking care of our health starts with small steps, and the very first step is knowing your number.
